L Eclisse
Hyde Park Picture House

The third film in Antonioni's great '60s trilogy (following L'Aventurra and La Notte) offers a fine example of his graceful, idiosyncratic, precise composition. The film pairs translator Vittoria (Monica Vitti) and stockbroker Pierro (Alain Delon) in a tentative love affair, punctuating long, contemplative scenes with hectic and rapidly edited sequences at the stock exchange. Rejecting the melodramatic standard of conventional plot, the director constructs what has been described as a 'series of soul states', pioneering a new kind of cinema.
