Cinema Versa Live: Asphalt
Holy Trinity Church on Boar Lane
6th November • 7.30pm
Accompanied by a live organist, this gem of German silent cinema is set in Berlin in the 1920s, where a well-dressed woman steals a precious stone from a jeweller's shop and tries to seduce the policeman (Gustav Froelich – Metropolis) who catches her, getting him involved in a web of intrigue and criminal activity stretching as far as Paris... Directed by Joe May, a great yet largely unheralded figure in German silent cinema, Asphalt's fast pace and frequent close-ups combine with avant -garde optical effects to deliver a brilliantly crafted film which puts May's talent up there with contemporaries like Lang and Lubitsch.
