Through unique forms of camera work, rapid editing techniques and a reliance on mythical texts, Markopoulos is a master visionary filmmaker who shapes new forms of narrative creating 'thought-images'. This programme offers a rare chance to see four of his key works: Ming Green, Bliss, Twice a Man and Psyc h e. Shortly before his death Markopoulos finished editing his monumental film project ENIAIOS which combines all his previous works into an 80 hour meditation created exclusively for open-air projection at the Temenos to connect the audience with his mythic themes.
Films (all Gregory Markopoulos, USA, 16mm):
BLISS (1967, 6mins)
The first film made by Markopoulos after moving to Europe, Bliss was shot over the course of two days using only available light to create a lyrical study of the interior of the Church of St. John on the island of Hydra.
PSYCHE (1947, 25mins)
This early film by Markopoulos was inspired by an unfinished novella by French poet and novelist Pierre Louÿs, whose sensuous evocations of ancient eroticism set the tone for the filmmaker's own poetic enterprise.
TWICE A MAN (1963, 49mins)
Based on Markopoulos's modernist reworking of the myth of Hippolytus, in which a chaste youth rejects the incestuous advances of his mother, Phaedre, and is saved from death by a caring physician, Twice a Man was filmed by Markopoulos in and around New York.
MING GREEN (1966, 7mins)
This portrait of the filmmaker's apartment, painted in the color of the title, was made a few months before his departure from New York. It is dedicated to the filmmaker Stan Brakhage and was shot without a scenario and edited entirely in the camera.
