Bamako
Vue Cinemas at The Light: Screen 5
5th November • 1.30pm
Bamako is a highly original approach to political cinema and a strong candidate for best African film since director Abderrahmane Sissako's last film, Waiting for Happiness. Beginning with a conventional story, Bamako introduces bar singer Melé, her unemployed husband Chaka and their friends and neighbours, but alongside the tales of everyday lives, an extraordinary courtroom drama unfolds in the village square. African civil society spokesmen have taken proceedings against the World Bank and the IMF and debate rages over responsibilities for the continent's suffering.
