A minimalist delight from Belgium, Guillaume Malandrin's film employs a social realist style similar to fellow countrymen the Dardenne Brothers, crafting a contemplative tale of a fractured family reunion. Jacques has just been released from prison and seeks permission to take his 10-year-old son on holiday although the two of them hardly know each other. He also approaches the child's estranged mother, all of whom are depicted and played with an understated poignancy in a gently moving film.
