Fantasy narrative and social documentary merge superbly in this exploration of role-play gamers in America who indulge their fantasies of who they want to be by steeping themselves in the intricate and charged world of Darkon. Fascinating, moving, embarrassing and hilarious, we see a fabricated world in which the alter ego takes over, and helps the (often outsider) ego get through everyday life. Through this probing look at identity and social power structures we come to realise that, for all its initial cathartic value, the world of Darkon isn't really all that diff e rent and people still lord it over each other – literally!
