Paying homage to Scorsese's Taxi Driver, Aku Louhimies (director of Frozen Land which won our Competition last year) brilliantly depicts the fate of a Helsinki taxi driver, Veli-Matti, whose marriage breaks down and who risks losing the right to see his children. Hopelessly drunk, he carries out an act of brutal violence on a sadistic neighbour, though he can't remember doing so, and is convicted of manslaughter. Frozen City explores Veli-Matti´s tragedy in great and moving depth, and makes very real the rawest and most painful themes of a human life.
