A Dedicated Life

A fascinating portrait of famous Japanese writer Mitsuharu Inoue, who is diagnosed with inoperable liver cancer. Inoue is another outsider figure, charismatic and contradictory, he is surrounded by admirers and devoted students and enjoys a venerable national reputation. However, what at first seems to be a tribute gradually reveals a character of dubious moral authority who has fabricated much of his own life story and reinvented himself as a living work of fiction. Nonetheless, he is also brave and dignified in the face of terminal illness and the film is also very moving.
