The first narrative fiction film by documentary master Kazuo Hara also breaks with convention as he casts four different actresses in the same role, that of the eponymous heroine Chika. The story tells of four different relationships during the turbulent political climate during the 1970s and a different actress is used in each sequence to emphasise how she is perceived in different ways by the men in her life: her husband, a rural teacher, a radical Tokyo student and an ageing gangster.
