This year's documentary prizewinner at Sundance is a brilliant debut by Jason Kohn, dissecting São Paulo's fatalistic food chain of extreme poverty, violence, unmitigated corruption, and overwhelming wealth. A protégé of Errol Morris (The Fog of War, The Thin Blue Line), Kohn uses a similar disorientating technique, assembling a montage of apparently surreal, unconnected sequences. Testimony of a kidnap victim, a plastic surgeon, a politician and the owner of a frog farm are gradually drawn together with a rich style of superb cinematography, innovative editing and a fantastic samba soundtrack.
