No Past to Speak Of
The Carriageworks: Film Forum
9 November • 6.45pm
No Past to Speak Of is a truly powerful and constructive documentary, an uplifting experience despite its disturbing subject matter. Infant rape is a horrific reality in contemporary South Africa but filmmaker Jeremy Gans rejects the tabloid outrage approach for a combination of patiently critical social commentary and a deeply moving story of recovery and hope. Vyanna, the victim of a brutal rape in a Johannesburg slum as a five-month-old baby, is adopted by African-American academic Claudia, who introduces love and stability into her life.
