Emerging as one of the leading directors in contemporary world cinema, Carlos Reygadas (Japon, Battle in Heaven) has created another visionary film with a subtle, unusual narrative and breathtakingly ambitious widescreen cinematography. Based partly on Danish master Carl Dreyer's 1955 classic Ordet, the film is set in a modern day Mennonite community in which the gentle harmony of family life is disturbed by adultery and spiritual crisis. Bookended by extraordinary time lapse sequences of daybreak and nightfall, the films builds slowly and inexorably towards a strange and transcendent climax.
