Welcome to Pioneertown, California – a dusty outpost perched on the edge of the Mojave Desert in the shadow of Los Angeles. Built in 1946 by Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, the town would go on to serve as the backdrop for some of Hollywood's last B-Westerns, but was forgotten by the mid-50s. A virtual ghost town, populated by motorcycle gangs, dope dealers and desert rats, a few of the hearty drifters stayed on and moved into the decaying old west storefronts, creating a surreal 21st Century version of Hollywood's Wild West.
Dead Horse Point
Dir. Jason Britski
Canada, 2006, 19 mins
UK Premiere
Dead Horse Point explores feelings of ambivalence for the western genre, and America as a nation. Beautiful cinematography encounters the landscapes, landmarks and notions of 'the old west' and 'the frontier', blurring the line between historical fact and myth, the role of Hollywood and history.
