There is such grace and breath-catching beauty in all aspects of this film; the cinematography is superb, the colours marvellous, the quietness and intermittent bursts of music sublime, and the integrity of the accomplishment quite astonishing. Through extensive and difficult research (faced with serious political and legal hurdles) the directors tell, for the first time, the true story of Puccini’s relationship with his house maid, without dialogue and set to gorgeous music including Puccini and Italian folk songs, telling a powerful tale.
