The first in the renowned trilogy of autobiographical films by leading Hungarian director Márta Mészáros, Diary for My Children is set during the turbulent years following the Second World War. Jan Nowicki plays a dual role as the factory-worker friend of revolutionary journalist Anna, and as the political-prisoner father of teen-age heroine Zsusza. The film bridges the personal and political lives of its protagonists with great authenticity and examines the conflicts of ideological revolutionaries now compromised by the onset of Stalinism.
