Challenging expectations on the borderlines of documentary, fiction and experimental cinema, José María de Orbe’s Father is a beautiful meditation on history, identity and a sense of place. It’s a ghostly story about the soul of a former Basque fortress from the 13th century unexpectedly incorporating silent projections of old Basque films against the walls of the crumbling mansion, fragments of conversation, memories and history, occasionally interrupted by school visits to the old house. It’s an allegorical ghost story that lingers in the memory, deeply resonant and strange.

Rats, I accidentally gave this one star but I meant to give it four – very interesting, very engaging, the old guy is great and the house looks amazing. It raises more questions than it answers and I definitely came out feeling deeply resonant and strange.
