Along with Aliens, we’re celebrating another birthday in our Alien Encounters programme, and for The Day the Earth Stood Still, it’s the big Six Zero! Standing the test of time as much for its message of peace and commentary on the Cold War as for its iconic giant robot Gort, one of the greatest 1950s sci-fi receives its anniversary screening on the Town Hall’s giant screen. Klaatu lands in Washington D.C. to bring a message to the leaders of Earth, but is greeted by hostility. Upon escaping from an army hospital, Klaatu assumes a false identity and meets Helen and her son Bobby, who slowly learn of Klaatu’s true purpose, and help him in his mission to warn the people of Earth that their violence must end.
