At times both very funny and deeply strange, Finisterrae is the highly original film debut by Sergio Caballero, co-director of the famous Sónar Music Festival in Barcelona. It’s an oddball, phantasmagoric fantasy following the wanderings of two ghosts through the Camino of Santiago to Finisterre, the end of the world. They encounter speaking animals and mysterious phenomena, enlightened by the otherworldly cinematography of Eduard Grau (A Single Man, Honour of the Knights) and a brilliantly eclectic musical soundtrack ranging from Suicide’s Ghost Rider to Nico’s Janitor of Lunacy.

Bugger – meant to give this three (or at least two), not one. A very entertaining 80 mins, sometimes very funny, never strange or deep – too ‘wacky’ to be any better than ‘quirky’ – and devised in an interesting way, but ultimately a bit of a student-y bedroom project with an oversized budget and access to boss soundtrack material. Just the kind of thing you want to watch one afternoon in the festival and I never have to see it again.
