Involuntary is a dazzling and highly original black comedy from one of the most exciting new talents in Scandinavian cinema, Ruben Östlund. It’s summer in Sweden… A primary school teacher decides to teach her colleagues a lesson they’ll never forget. Teenage girls are indulging in a webcam tease and seducing strangers. University students are taking male bonding to a new level. And as day turns to night, a coach driver decides enough is enough and won’t drive his passengers any further. ‘…a coolly non-judgmental comic picture of the appalling things people do to each other…’ (Screen Daily)

I think this film was sold wrong – everyone I went with was very disappointed, expecting a dazzling and highly original black comedy.
Actually, the comedy is minor and not the main event. This film is a humanitarian drama about the things (mainly not appalling and fairly routine) that occur as a result of interpersonal relationships. If you’ve seen any Todd Solondz this is like Happiness for toddlers (Ha! Todd for toddlers… oh, forget it), if not – go straight to Solondz.
The awkward angles-vibe and decapitated dialogues has been done more brilliantly and beautifully in other films – I’ll post if the titles come back to me.
I think I meant humanist, not humanitarian. But the flag bit is funny.
