Sean returns from Afghanistan to find his heart and head in disarray. When he is befriended by strong willed Evangelical Christian, Ike (a raw, perfect performance by Will Oldham) he reaches a cross-road, and it is difficult to see which route leads to salvation. Alverson’s second feature is a subtle and quiet meditation on mutual need and uncomfortable intimacy that accompanies spirituality in the modern world. New Jerusalem is a brilliant addition to the contemporary American Indie landscape and a must see for fans of the work of Kelly Reichardt (Meek’s Cutoff) and David Gordon Green (George Washington).
