She Monkeys is an intense and taboo-challenging drama about the sexual awakening of Swedish teenagers with powerful, naturalistic performances by its young actors. When Emma tries out for the local voltige (horseback acrobatics) team she befriends the attractive and confident Cassandra, but feelings of jealousy, competetiveness and sexual attraction have them pushing each other to their limits. As Emma spends more and more time away from home with Cassandra, her little sister Sara begins to discover her own sexual identity. Lisa Aschan’s startling debut is not constrained by political correctness and encourages a perceptive assessment of teenage sexuality where gender is both a weapon and a toy.
