Movie characters such as Freddy in Nightmare on Elm Street and Norman Bates in Psycho suggest that people with mental illness are violent, evil and out of control. This is the view of Dr Peter Byrne, Consultant Psychiatrist at Newham University Hospital and Director of Public Education at the Royal College of Psychiatrists, who has connected his passion for cinema to the world of psychiatry. In a special guest lecture, Dr Byrne will illuminate and deconstruct representations of mental illness from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and A Beautiful Mind to classics like Psycho and Repulsion screening in the festival.
