No self-respecting ‘greatest movies of all time’ list could leave out Alfred Hitchcock’s famous thriller, always worth revisiting on the big screen. Psycho is famous for many reasons; its bold re-invention of thriller narrative conventions, the perfection of Hitchcock’s nerve-wrenching suspense, Bernard Herrmann’s dissonant score, the creepy performance by Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates, the infamous shower scene. But although it’s a undeniably a classic film, it’s also perpetuated negative stereotypes of mental illness and is screening here in conjunction with the Time to Change initiative, re-evaluating the relationship of attitudes to mental health and cinema, see also Peter Byrne’s Screentalk.
