Bela Tarr’s Satantango is one of the landmarks of modern cinema, a true epic at seven and half hours, it’s a monumental, must see experience on the big screen. Made in Hungary shortly after the collapse of communism, the film is set in a ramshackle rural community. Many of the villagers are set to leave under the guidance of the charismatic, ambiguous Irimias. The film flows in long and sinuous takes, introducing intersecting non-linear time lines and challenging all the conventions of cinema at the last sigh of its first century.
