The Round Up combines the delicate choreography of a musical with the brutal sensibilities of a war film, profoundly influencing filmmakers from Sergio Leone to Béla Tarr. Set in a detention camp in Hungary 1869, at a time of guerrilla campaigns against the ruling Austrians, the film depicts the desperate quest to quell the last remaining supporters of Lajos Kossuth’s 1848 revolution. Miklos Jancsó uses his formidable technique to create a remarkable and terrifying picture of war and the abuse of power that retains its grace and power to this day.
