After flooding in the remote Vermont mountains, strange stories surface of odd things found in the swollen rivers. Albert Wilmarth, a folklore professor at Miskatonic University, at first dismisses these sightings. That is, until he begins to correspond with Henry Akeley, a farmer who claims strange creatures are terrorizing him. Like in their silent-film version of The Call of Cthulhu, filmmakers Sean Branney and Andrew Lehman evoke the classic cinematic style of classic ‘30s horror films with a touch of ‘50s B-movie sci-fi. The film perfectly captures the weird menace and foreboding atmosphere of Lovecraft’s original tale.
