LIFF29 is thrilled to announce two huge new festival selections with the addition of both Youth, starring Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel and Room, winner of the People’s Choice Award at Toronto International Film Festival, both taking place in the stunning setting of Leeds Town Hall’s Victoria Hall on Sunday 15 November.
Dir. Paolo Sorrentino, Italy / France / Switzerland / UK, 2015, 118 min
Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel both give terrific performances in a sensual cinematic symphony on ageing, memory, creativity, love and loss. Paolo Sorrentino follows his bravura The Great Beauty with a more tender and intimate drama, equally beautifully shot with a magnificent soundtrack. Set mostly in the grand surroundings of a Swiss Mountain spa, the film follows distinguished composer Fred (Michael Caine), as he tries to resist attempts to lure him out of retirement; and his old friend, Mick (Harvey Keitel), an ageing film director planning his last magnum opus.

Dir. Lenny Abrahamson, Ireland / Canada, 2015, 118 min
Based on the Booker-shortlisted bestseller by Irish-Canadian novelist Emma Donoghue, Room is a tale of survival and endurance that is by turns harrowing, suspenseful and wondrous. Recounting the story of a mother and child escaping from the captivity in which they have been held for several years, this visionary drama explores the trauma of being stolen from the world – and the marvel of discovering it for the first time. ‘This drama is as big as all outdoors in scope; poetic and profound in its exploration of the senses; blessed with two transcendent performances, by Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay; and as elegantly wrought as any film that has come our way in a very long while.’ (Wall Street Journal)
