Short Film City International Competitions and Awards begin today in Victoria Hall

The Short Film City competitions begin today in the Victoria Hall with the unmissable Louis le Prince International Short Film Competition and the World Animation Award. This year’s films have been selected from a record number of entries and include the work of established filmmakers and directorial debuts, as well as boasting a number of UK premieres and award-winning films. The winners of both competitions will be considered for the live action short film and short animation categories of the Academy Awards, as LIFF is a qualifying event.

In the Louis le Prince International Short Film Competition – named after the 19th-century, French-born and Leeds-based film pioneer – 33 short films from 30 countries are selected across six programmes, with 22 premieres – 19 UK, 2 European, and 1 World. The Louis le Prince competition screens from Monday 18 to Wednesday 20 November at Leeds Town Hall, in what may be the most intensive and unforgettable viewing experience in the whole of LIFF27 – and you can see all six programmes for the price of three.

Every year the World Animation Award invites the best new animated films to Leeds and this year’s competition is definitely one you won’t want to miss. 30 shorts have been selected from 21 countries, screening across three programmes on 18 and 19 November at Leeds Town Hall.

The competitions continue on the last day of LIFF27, Thursday 21 November, with two British programmes (15 films selected) and one Yorkshire programme (8 films selected), all screening at the Hyde Park Picture House in what is set to be a thrilling finale to Short Film City 2013. All British films selected for Short Film City 2013 can be considered for the short film categories of the BAFTAs, for which LIFF is also a qualifying event.

The Short Film City competitions are judged by a five-member jury including LIFF’s very own Méliès d’Argent winning director Tom Van Avermaet. The winners of the Short Film City 2013 competitions will be announced on Thursday 21 November on leedsfilm.com.
