Velorama and Short Films

Left Bank, Leeds. 30th June, 7pm.

Velorama was commissioned to mark the arrival of the 2014 Tour de France and the film was screened all around Yorkshire during the first edition of the Yorkshire Festival.

Filmmaker Daisy Askwith selected archive material from amateur and home-movie collections at the Yorkshire Film Archive to make Velorama, one of her favourites was the film featuring British Cyclo-Cross Championship 1962, made by Morley Cycling Club and featuring Yorkshire’s own Beryl Burton.

Using a collage of archive film clips and animation, with a soundtrack composed by Bill Nelson, she produced this delightful and absorbing film which depicts a whole century of cycling, from the invention of the bicycle and the rise of recreational cycling to the gruelling pursuit of Le Tour.

This time the film will be shown alongside a programme of short films where the bicycle is the star. These have been selected by the Leeds Bicycle Film Club, whose packed screenings in a much loved Leeds restaurant are proving that cycling and celluloid are an excellent combination.
