Set across 1977 and 1927, director Todd Haynes’ follow-up to Carol (LIFF 2015) is another lush and sensuous tale of dual yearnings in New York City. Two young kids set out from their small-town homes to seek an absent parent. Each heads for the Big Apple, and faces the same challenge of hearing-impairment. The earlier story is told via crisp, dialogue-free monochrome, the latter in vivid midcentury colour, and the stories dovetail in a tearjerker finale. Adapted from the bestselling novel by Brian Selznick.
