Leeds Film: Film at Home

As we wait for cinemas to reopen later in the summer, we are sharing recommendations for viewing films at home as well curating our own programming with special LIFF Presents selections. For more details and for the latest updates on Leeds International Film Festival, Leeds Young Film Festival and the Independent Directions Film Festival, see our dedicated Film at Home section.

In line with national guidance to manage the impact of Covid-19 in Leeds, a large number of Leeds City Council buildings and facilities remain closed to the public until further notice. These include Leeds Town Hall, Carriageworks Theatre and Pudsey Civic Hall.

Part of film history since 1888

The world’s first films were made in Leeds in 1888 by Louis le Prince and today the city is a leading centre for film culture located in the heart of Yorkshire, a major European filmmaking region. Leeds film culture includes fantastic new and historic cinemas, exciting film festivals throughout the year, special film events in landmark locations, three universities with dedicated film departments, and a dynamic movement of societies and individuals organising their own film activities. Leeds is home to Screen Yorkshire, which is driving the expansion of film production in the region, and to BBC Yorkshire and ITV Studios: the city is also the new home for Channel 4. Leeds is a nationally-recognised hub for talent development with increasing opportunities for young people in the city’s creative industries, leading to new careers and businesses.

Leeds Film delivers and supports film culture in Leeds and beyond

Part of Leeds City Council and supported by the British Film Institute, Leeds Film delivers three annual film festivals: the Academy Award and BAFTA qualifying Leeds International Film Festival (November); the UK's largest family film event, Leeds Young Film Festival (Easter); and the new Independent Directions Film Festival (October). Leeds Film also delivers: year-round audience development support for film culture in Leeds and the wider city region, including LIFF Presents and LIFF Selects; projects and programmes for young people including Burberry Inspire, the INDIs Network, and the BFI Film Academy Leeds; and the Leeds Short Film Awards with seven regional, national and international competitions.
