Leeds Young Film offers a number of opportunities and activities for children and families.

Leeds Young Film Festival

The flagship of Leeds Young Film's offer, the film festival has been running since 1999. Taking place at Easter the festival showcases new and unseen films from around the world, as well as classic movies and favourites rarely seen on the big screen. Alongside the films we offer workshops, masterclasses and special events in partnership with organisations like BAFTA Kids, Aardman, LEGO and Disney. We also run the UK's first family VR screenings and events.

Aimed at children aged 0-12 and their families the festival takes place over two weeks every Easter at venues across Leeds.

The 2020 festival has been postponed due to COVID-19 but we are hoping to deliver a slimmed-down version of the festival later this year. At present the 2021 film festival is expected to go ahead at East as planned. You can find links to the 2020 programme and previous editions of LYFF in the footer at the bottom of the page.

Top Films for Children

Finding films to watch as a family can be a minefield with so much content available on-demand. During COVID-19 we produced a list of films that can be found on the most popular streaming platforms (Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+) which can be found here.

We have also created a list of what we consider to be some of the best family films of all time. Some of these films are easily accessible on popular streaming sites, many others are available to buy or rent while several may be more difficult to find. You can find this list here.

Filmmaking Tips A-Z

Many of you are keen to make your own short films and we want to help you to make them the best they can be. We are lucky to have filmmaker Gage Oxley as part of the Leeds Young Film team and he has created an A-Z of filmmaking tips, for inspiration and support. We are working through the alphabet and you can find the videos we've already created, along with the full list here.
