In a dystopian near-future single people must leave The City and check into The Hotel, where they have 45 days to find their perfect mate or be turned into an animal of their choice and be released into The Woods. Newcomer David (Colin Farrell) struggles with the enforced socialising and his mix of awkward machismo and fragile humility reduce his chances of finding a partner.  As the days pass he decides to feign interest with a woman in order to escape his fate.

Yorgos Lanthimos (Dogtooth) delivers an unpredictable, offbeat, and at times funny, film that reflects how overwhelming our modern-day social pressures can be.

Philosophy & Film is an ongoing series at Hyde Park Picture House, held in partnership with the University of Leeds and Durham University, exploring philosophical questions raised by some of cinema’s most intriguing films. Each film in this series is selected by an academic philosopher, who delivers a short talk after the film, exploring philosophical themes raised. Discussion then opens up to the audience.
