On Sunday 30 July, we’re be transforming Millennium Square into an open-air cinema for the day with a line-up of timeless films to celebrate the music, movies and the unmistakable feeling of summer. Part of the Summer Series, an annual series of outdoor gigs from world-renowned blockbuster acts and emerging artists.

A crowd sits in front of a large screen on stage, in front of a dusky sunset sky. Text reads: Cinema on the Square

Watch a movie, concert style. Our open-air cinema screen will be set up on the Millennium Square main stage, so you can sit back, get comfy and enjoy the film. Each event will be ticketed separately, with tickets for each film at just £5.

We'll be starting the day in style with a musical update of a nostalgic classic that the whole family can enjoy; Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical, based on the hit show with music and lyrics by comedian/composer Tim Minchin. This new film adaptation combines Dahl's captivating storytelling with the magic of musical theater, ensuring an upbeat, toe-tapping start to the day for fans of the original film and newcomers alike. There is a family ticket offer available for this screening.

Following this will be the quintessential coming-of-age story, Stand By Me, a landmark of 1980s cinema that takes an enduring look at friendship, mortality, and the adventures of youth. Set in the height of summer, the film follows four boys who, determined to become town heroes, set out on a hike to find a missing boy, with a stand-out soundtrack crammed with early rock & roll numbers and timeless hits.

As the summer evening sets in we’ll be transported to the summer of 1969 in one of the greatest concert films of recent memory, Summer of Soul, weaving music and history through lost footage of the forgotten Harlem Cultural Festival. Listen to icons like Stevie Wonder, Mahalia Jackson, The Staples Singers, Nina Simone, BB King, Sly and the Family Stone and more in this inspiring musical documentary that never fails to raise your spirits.

Cinema on the Square closes with the unique anime musical fantasy film Interstella 5555conceived by Daft Punk as they produced their second album Discovery, featuring every song – in order and with no dialogue.
