Criterion Collection

We're delighted to be working with Sony Home Entertainment, to give away two bundles of newly released Blu-rays from The Criterion Collection's exceptional series of classic and contemporary cinema each month. January's releases include:

Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959) - A cornerstone of the French New Wave, the first feature from Alain Resnais is one of the most influential films of all time. With an innovative flashback structure and an Academy Award–nominated screenplay by novelist Marguerite Duras, Hiroshima Mon Amour is a moody masterwork that delicately weaves past and present, personal pain and public anguish.

Down By Law (1986) - Jim Jarmusch's Down By Law is part nightmare and part fairy tale, featuring sterling performances and crisp black-and-white cinematography. When fate brings together three hapless men - an unemployed disc jockey (Tom Waits), a small-time pimp (John Lurie), and a strong-willed Italian tourist (Roberto Benigni) - in a Louisiana prison, a singular adventure ensues.

In the Realm of the Senses (1976) - Provocative Japanese director Nagisa Oshima's In the Realm of the Senses remains one of the most controversial films of all time. Based on a true incident, it graphically depicts the all-consuming, transcendent - but ultimately destructive - love of a man and a woman (Tatsuya Fuji and Eiko Matsuda) living in an era of ever escalating imperialism and governmental control.

For a chance to win January's new releases, answer the following question: In which 2003 film by Jim Jarmusch does singer and actor Tom Waits star alongside Iggy Pop?

Please email answers to leeds.film@leeds.gov.uk by midnight on Monday 31 January 2022.
