Access at Leeds Young Film Festival

Leeds Young Film Festival is committed to making our events as accessible and welcoming as possible for all audiences.

On this page, you’ll find information about the different access options available across the festival, as well as accessibility details for individual venues. We recognise that access is not one-size-fits-all, and that everyone’s needs and experiences are different.

If you have any specific access requirements, questions, or feedback, please get in touch with us at leeds.film@leeds.gov.uk and we’ll do our best to help.

Films with Descriptive Subtitles

Descriptive subtitles appear directly on the screen, usually at the bottom, just like traditional subtitles. However, they include additional information such as sound effects, music cues, and speaker identification, which may be enclosed in brackets or use different formatting to distinguish them from dialogue. These visual cues allow viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing to not only follow the conversations but also understand key auditory elements that enhance the atmosphere and storytelling of the film.

Autism Friendly Screenings

Autism Friendly screenings are screenings where the environment has been adapted to be more welcoming and accessible to people with additional needs. This could include people living with autism, or other people with neurodiversity.

Venue Access

All venues offer step-free access to the screening space, though some require staff assistance and facilities vary.

We recognise that accessibility involves more than step-free access, and that facilities and support can vary between venues. On this page, you’ll find venue-specific accessibility information, including links to official access guides where available.

In some cases, detailed accessibility information is limited. We’ve included everything we currently know and are continuing to work with venues to gather more details. If you have specific access requirements or questions about a particular venue, please get in touch and we’ll be happy to help.

Please check individual access venue pages for details on booking an essential companion ticket.
