Mārama

A young Māori woman faces the horror of her colonial heritage in this stunning Gothic horror.

Mary leaves New Zealand for Victorian Yorkshire looking to explore her family history. Against her better judgement, she takes on a role as governess in Hawkser Manor. But something is off and Mary realises she may be trapped inside the estate with buried secrets and dark, terrifying visions. A brooding and poignant exploration of the horror of colonialism and the erasing of Māori culture.

"Mārama bears a striking clarity of purpose -- suggesting the horror genre still possesses the ability to turn even a long-ago moment of righteous fury into communal confrontation and spiritual release." — Alison Foreman, IndieWire
