Mira Nair’s extraordinary debut plunges us into the teeming streets of Bombay through the eyes of ten-year-old Krishna.

Abandoned by his family, he joins a community of children surviving on the margins of the city, determined to earn enough money to return home. Shot on location with a largely non-professional cast, Salaam Bombay! combines neorealist immediacy with deep compassion in its heartbreaking portrait of childhood and survival.

"A film of unflinching realism that offers no catharsis, and also of thrilling vitality that allows no pity." — Devika Girish, Criterion
