Taipei Story

Edward Yang’s melancholy masterpiece captures Taipei at a moment of dizzying transformation.

As ambitious Chin looks towards the future, her boyfriend Lung, played by fellow New Taiwan Cinema master Hou Hsiao-hsien, remains tethered to the past, and their relationship begins to drift apart. Against a cityscape of gleaming towers and neon-lit streets, Yang’s gorgeous compositions capture the pace of urban change while finding moments of intimacy and beauty within the modern metropolis.

"So much of the pleasure of watching the film is rooted in its masterful application of light, shadow, and color." — Angeline Gragasin, Screen Slate
