Explore how our educational projects are helping young people unlock their potential through film.

At Leeds Young Film we believe that film is a powerful way to inspire and empower young people. Through our work with schools, educators, and organizations, we deliver creative projects that teach valuable skills, encourage creativity and help young people to imagine a future in the film and media industry.

Below, you’ll find highlights from some of our favourite projects, working with partners to create meaningful opportunities for learning and growth.

WORKING WITH LEEDS YOUNG FILM

Burberry Inspire

Leeds Young Film alongside Leeds Playhouse, Northern Ballet and The Hepworth Wakefield partnered with the Burberry Foundation and Ideas Foundation to deliver the Burberry Inspire programme, providing immersive arts and culture education to thousands of Key Stage 3 11 – 14 year-olds in Yorkshire over four years. The project completed in 2022.

Over the four years we worked with young people to become the next generation of film talent, opening up skills and career opportunities in film and media that they may not have considered. The students took part in filmmaking related workshops to develop transferable cultural skills including: Virtual Reality, documentary, music video, social media and vlogging and art film. They also met and worked alongside a series of high profile guests from the industry who shared, not only their skills but also their knowledge and the story of their path to the sector.

The impact of Burberry Inspire was studied by the Policy Institute at King’s College London which examined how cultural and creative education can help young people transcend challenging circumstances, widen their horizons and realise their aspirations.

You can read the final evaluation report and video here.

INTO FILM

Leeds Young Film has worked for many years with Into Film, delivering training programmes aimed at teachers, trainee teachers and educators.

The CPD training introduces a series of tools which build teachers' abilities to help their learners contextualise and decode film, learning key literacy skills such as inference, deduction and analysis which can be applied to film and other texts.

The CPD training is delivered by Debbie Maturi, Manager of Leeds Young Film. More information upon request.

LEEDS 2023

I have considered creating a production for each festival, set in the future so it appears in the listings as well but would prefer to avoid this method if possible.
