“City of Wind is a carefully tended flame that spreads a little circle of light and warmth in the world’s coldest capital.” - Jessica Kiang, Variety

“A scintillating, spiritual coming-of-age drama about a teenage shaman trapped between modernity and tradition.” - Siddhant Adlakha, IndieWire

City of Wind is a beautifully nuanced coming-of-age story set in contemporary Mongolia. The film centres on Ze, a shy and studious 17-year-old about to graduate high school. Yet, unlike his classmates he must balance his schoolwork with another responsibility, that of a shaman, communing with ancestral spirits to help those in his community. When he meets 16-year-old Maralaa, his desires are awakened and a tender romance unfolds. Ze soon embraces a different side of himself, dyes his hair, drinks in nightclubs, and gets into trouble at school. Lkhagvadulam Purev-Ochir’s luminous debut feature is a delicate portrait of a young man caught between two realms.
