“[Holland's] broadside against callousness and indifference speaks for itself and affirms the sanctity of life through the superhuman distance some will go to protect theirs.” - Charles Bramesco, Little White Lies

“A heart-in-mouth thriller set on the Polish-Belarusian border that wraps its social critique in the razor wire of punchy, intelligent cinematic craft in order to elicit precisely such emotions.” - Jessica Kiang, Variety

In Agnieszka Holland's harrowing drama, a Syrian family becomes entangled in political turmoil whilst seeking refuge in Poland. Shot in black-and-white, the film traverses the crisis at the Poland-Belarus border, where refugees navigate perilous paths to a new life, while Belarus manipulates the crisis to antagonise the EU. Although scripted, Green Border navigates the real-life crisis like a documentary, critiquing political mishandling whilst delving into the intersecting lives of migrants, activists and guards. A stark portrayal of the human costs of geopolitical games amidst Europe's ongoing refugee crisis which elicited huge critical backlash from the Polish Government.
