Slave to Sirens is the Middle East’s first (and only) all-women heavy metal band. Founded by friends Lilas and Sherry, the bandmates share everything: jam sessions, laughs and their innermost fears. Being in the limelight isn’t easy, particularly during the height of the Lebanese revolution where their futures are growing further out of their control. From the highs of performing at Glastonbury, to the lows of dealing with overbearing patriarchal tradition, Sirens is an electric collage of ambition, frustration and kicking a**. With magnetic gig footage and intimate behind-the-scenes chats, Rita Baghdadi presents a high-octane coming-of-age documentary that’ll leave you wanting to thrash the system.

Women In Metal Talk

Before the screening Helen Tytherleigh will be talking about what drew her to metal, along with her experiences (and often frustrations) of playing in bands and being a woman in the music industry. She will talk about the changes she’s seen over the last decade, what support there is now for women in the industry and the promising future of metal.

Since aged 15 Helen has played bass guitar on and off in metal bands. Her current band is Leeds based post-metal act Hundred Year Old Man with whom she’s toured UK and Europe with and played bass on their latest album ‘Sleep in Light’. Helen studied English and Music at University of Leeds and while there took a placement year to work at music management company Northern Music Co. On the side of studying, she grew grassroots technical metal festival UK Tech-Fest, which was where she found her love of events and now works as a Production Manager for arts and music festivals.
