During a brutal police raid on environmental protesters occupying Germany's Hamburgh Forest in 2018, student filmmaker Steffen Meyn accidentally recorded his own death, apparently falling from a tree. He had been recording the story of the occupation for over two years, exploring the protester's makeshift treehouse camps with his videocamera mounted on a bicycle helmet. Posthumously completed by Steffen's friends and converted into widescreen format, Lonely Oaks examines the environmental conflicts that ultimately lead to the filmmakers death, mixing in new interviews with activists who knew Steffen while questioning the darker sides of their idealism and the purpose of protest. A fascination and powerful story that is highly recommended.
